1080p phones are on the way
2013 is set to bring the next step in the evolution of smartphones, full HD displays. With HTC, Lenovo, Sharp, LG and Oppo Mobile (don’t worry, I hadn’t heard about them either) leading the charge, this should be an emerging trend to watch out for next year.
Sharp and Japan Display Inc. are the companies behind these 5-inch, 440 ppi displays. Yes, you read that correctly, 440 pixels per inch. To put that in perspective, the iPhone 5 has a (mere?) 326 ppi display that measures 4-inches on the diagonal, while the XperiaAcro S and Nokia’s Lumia 920 have 342 and 331 ppi displays, respectively.
This class of phones seems to employ Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 ProSoC and Adreno 320 graphics at the minimum.
HTC will, in all probability, be the first to market with a phone like this, with the HTC J Butterfly launching in Japan in December. It’ll launch as the HTC Deluxe worldwide, and the Droid DNA in the US.
These phones could really do with a micro SD card slot, so we’re hoping and praying manufactures don’t expect users to cram 1080p videos into less than 16GB of in-built storage, like HTC’s done with the DNA in the US.
