Taxi operators threaten to go off roads
The taxi operators have threatened to go for an indefinite strike from July 8 unless the state government agrees for a hike in the taxi fares in wake of the recent increase in the diesel prices. The private bus and minibus operators, however, will not go for any strike.
The bus, minibus and taxi operators held separate meetings with state transport minister Ranjit Kundu on Tuesday as chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging him to withhold the decision of petroleum products price hike.
Bengal Bus Syndicate president Swarnakamal Saha said, “We did not demand any fare hike primarily but suggested the state government to withdraw the cess and sales tax on diesel to offset an additional burden of Rs 9,000 per bus per month.” The minibus operators, however, submitted a proposal for a 20 per cent increase in the fares at every stage. The taxi operators, on the other hand, submitted two alternative proposals for fare hike.
