State sends partial probe report to KMC
After much delay, the state government has finally sent a part of the Sourin Roy Committee report of the Stephen Court tragedy to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). The committee has mentioned irregularities from the KMC’s part. Mayor Sovan Chatterjee has expressed his displeasure on not receiving the full report. He
said, “We have received only page 38 to page 58 of the report. The KMC would not be able to take necessary action if they do not get the full report with the recommendations.”
According to the officials of the building department of the KMC, the committee has mentioned that there are no files related to the Stephen Court building plan sanction despite the fact that the building plans were sanctioned in 1920, 1975 (for the fifth, sixth and seventh floor) and renewed in 1984. Interestingly, the commission has also pointed out that the KMC failed to produce the documents of the mutation certificates of the residential flats in the building. Furthermore, the committee has raised questions over the residential dwellers. It has also asked the state government to order a separate probe into the construction of the fifth and sixth floor.
