Nanoor on boil as ex-CPM MLA killed
Nanoor in Birbhum district was once again on the boil following the brutal murder of a former CPI(M) MLA Ananda Das. CPI(M)’s Birbhum district secretary Dilip Ganguly has blamed the Trinamul Congress for the mayhem.
“At around 5.30 pm, armed Trinamul Congress supporters holding their party flags assembled at Nanoor bus stand area. They bombed the Citu and CPI(M) zonal offices. Our party cadre barely managed to flee and save their lives. The blood-thirsty goons then went to former MLA Ananda Das’ house. He was called out and shot dead,” Mr Ganguly added.
The CPI(M) has called 12 hour bandh in Birbum in protest.
A profusely-bleeding Das lay on the ground. The police could reach the spot with great difficulty after a long delay. Das was taken to Nanoor primary health centre where he was declared brought dead.
CPM state secretary Biman Bose alleged that armed Trinamul Congress gang killed our party leader and bombed party office in a pre-planned murder.
“The former CPI(M) legislator’s murder triggered tension in the area. The police is trying to bring the situation under control,” Birbhum police superintendent R.N. Mukherjee said.
Trinamul Congress district president Anubrata Mondal has rejected the CPI(M) charges. “Our party workers were not involved. The violence was the outcome of the CPI(M)’s internal feud,” he added.
The trouble had started when a Trinamul Congress worker Shamsul Hoda alias Phulu Sheikh was shot at in the afternoon. He was RSP worker who had switched sides recently. Sources said that the firing on him sparked anger among Trinamul Congress supporters who suspected CPI(M) hand in it.
Nanoor has been one of the most politically disturbed areas in the state. It hit the headlines in July 2000 when 11 people were killed allegedly by the CPI(M) in Suchpur village under the Nanoor police station.
