HIV positive engineering student commits suicide
In a tragic incident, a student of Murshidabad College of Engineering and Technology committed suicide allegedly after being identified as a HIV positive patient. However, his parents claimed that he was a victim of ragging.
Mohan Kumar, a resident of Bihar, had donated his blood at a camp on August 27. Thereafter, the hospital authorities informed the college that he was found to be HIV positive. On Thursday evening, Mohan, 19, was found hanging from the ceiling fan inside his hostel room.
College chairman Rabin Mazumdar claimed that they had tried a lot to counsel him but unfortunately he had lost all hope in life and thus ended his life. But the victim’s father, Ramananda Singh claimed, “My son was not HIV positive. He was very much into social work and had donated his blood earlier also. He was ragged to death.” Berhampore IC Sanjeev De, however, said that according to preliminary investigations he had committed suicide unable to bear the harsh reality. The police has also found a suicide note from the victim, he added. Ironically, Mr Singh did not lodge any complaint at the police station.
According to sources, when the college authorities came to know that Mohan was HIV positive, they had send him back to his hometown at Begusarai as other students had raised a huge hue and cry. When Mohan returned to his hostel after a few days, he felt like an outcast and hence took this drastic step.
