City to hold parallel Aids conference
For the first time, Kolkata is going to host an International AIDS Conference (IAC) — Global Health Hub — from July 22-27 with hundreds of sex workers, physicians and representatives of different organisations to discuss the ways and means to prevent the disease.
The programme will be organised parallel to the IAC which will be held at Washington D.C. in United States due to the US government’s travel restrictions on sex workers in that country.
Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC), Global Network of Sex Work Project (NSWP) and All India Network of Sex Workers (AINSW) are jointly organising the conference at Swabhumi.
On Monday, Samarjit Jana, chair, IAC, Kolkata told this newspaper: “This is the first of its kind conference on AIDS to be held not only in Kolkata but also in India. Around 1,000 participants are expected to attend the programme. Of them, around 750 alone will be sex workers from different continents.” The rest will be key functionaries and technical experts from various national and international agencies, including the United Nations and policymakers at the government levels working to control AIDS, he informed.
