Vytilla junction MVD’s most watched area
Vytilla junction, the busiest junction in the state, sees the most motorists being fined. The Motor Vehicle Departme-nt has installed five hi-tech-cameras here, which, unlike those in most other places, can capture violations like breaking a red light and over-speeding when the signal is green.
“Yes it’s a fact; the most number of violation notices in the state are issued here. For instance, on a single day, over 4,250 cases are being charged on an average in the Vytilla- Cherthala section where 15 of the cameras are installed. Vytilla has five of them and accounts for the biggest share,” a seni-or official of the Motor Ve-hicle Department told DC.
The MV department has installed underground sensors on zebra crossings on all four sides. “The sensors are activated when the vehicle’s speed is over 70 kmph as it goes through the zebra crossing, and the camera captures the imag-es as proof.
Vehicles often speed to cross the signal before it turns red. This is dangerous as by that time vehicles from the other side have already started moving,” the official said.
Drivers often stop their vehicles on the zebra line not realising that this is a violation. “The camera, equipped with a flash so it can work round the clock, will capture the image unless they stop before the stop line just before the zebra crossing,” the official said.
