Vote for green city
The Mangalavanam bird sanctuary and its surrounding areas may soon be declared an ecologically sensitive zone.
The environment advisory committee chaired by Hibi Eden MLA, which met on Monday, passed a resolution to bring in strict regulations for better conservation of the bird sanctuary and its buffer zone.
“We also want a comprehensive scientific study done on why birds are abandoning this patch of forest. Over the years there has been a considerable fall in the number of birds coming to Manga-lavanam.
Ornitholo- gists, who have confirmed a dip in the number of migratory birds arriving, have given various reasons for it. The study must look at the rare species of trees and birds in the sanctuary as well,” said Hibi Eden, adding that the forest minister, K.B. Ganesh Kumar, would be invited to visit the area.
The committee has also suggested banning construction and real estate development in the vicinity of the sanctuary and advised the corporation to remove the drainage passing through the mangrove forest.
“The corporation has a significant role in preserving Mangalavanam. Strict regulations must be brought in to stop construction activities that block the migratory path of birds as the sharp fall in their number is being blamed on increased construction work, extensive use of glass windowpanes and noise pollution,” admit corporation officers.
