Thiruvananthapuram tops list of shame
A total of 605 police personnel, including an ADGP, an IG, a DIG and an SP, are facing criminal charges.
While 533 have been arraigned by the local police, the vigilance has taken cases against 29 and the CBI, 36.
Seven others have been charged either by the excise or forest department. While retired ADGP S. Pulikesi is facing a CBI case in which the chargesheet has already been submitted before the CBI court in Kochi, the list prepared by the police include the names of IGs Tomin J. Thachankary and S.Sreejith.
Thiruvananthapuram, with cases against 118 cops, takes the top spot. Ernakulam comes second with 62 and Kollam has 47 cops on the criminal list.
These revelations were made by K.C. Sudarsana Kumar, junior superintendent of the State Public Information Office, to RTI activist D. B. Binu in reply to an RTI query.
The list was prepared in September 2011. The RTI query also revealed that the police had issued a circular in September 2011 itself for monitoring and reviewing the cases registered against the cops.
On Monday, a division bench of the Kerala High Court had asked the state to file an action taken report on the list prepared by the police.
Earlier, Justice Thottathil B.Radhakrishnan and Justice C.T. Ravikumar, had made it clear that those accused in criminal cases are not needed in the police force.
