A teacher’s diary written in verse

Poets are not born. At least, some of them. It certainly is so in the case of K.A. Lisy, a teacher. Her poems are the result of her social milieu…her experiences and her anguish. She pours out these thoughts through words.

Lisy started writing poems in Malayalam. It was the unbearable sorrow of seeing the tragic end of one of her students that stirred the poet in her. The sight of the body hanging is a memory she has not been able to erase.

The science teacher at St. Mary’s High School, Chengaloor, in Thrissur, started scribbling down her emotions. The lines later turned into a poem titled...’Enthinee kadumkai?’.

“I started writing poems a few years ago. I have written 50 poems in Malayalam. Out of this, a collection of 25 poems will soon be published as a volume titled ‘Teacher’s Diary’,” says Lisy.
Prof K.V. Baby, head of the department of Malayalam, of St.Thomas College Thrissur, has written the foreword and it will be brought out by Doorframes Publications.

“In the wake of a lot of encouragement, I started writing poems in English too. I have so far written 30 poems in English.” One of her poems titled ‘Retiring Teacher’ was penned while bidding farewell to one of her colleagues.

Science subjects were her forte and those were what she taught. However, her affinity lies in creative writing, says one of her colleagues. “Social themes are the subjects of my poems,” Lisy adds. Her works have already been published in school, college magazines and journals.

Lisy’s husband C.A. George, deputy director, local fund audit wing, of Aluva municipality, is the motivating force behind her creative talent. She loves to read novels, short stories and poems. Among poets, O.N.V.Kurup happens to be her favourite.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
