Stop ruthless tree-cutting: protection council
The Ernakulam chapter of the Tree Protection Council has petitioned the Superintendent of Police, Ernakulam Rural District, against the indiscriminate cutting of trees on NH-47 for a clear view of various hoardings.
The petition, signed by council secretary K.S.Nafin, said that last week a number of the trees planted by the forest department opposite Indroyal Furniture showroom near the T.V.S. Junction, Kalamasserry, were cut by an advertising agency at night.
The petitioner said that such ruthless annihilation of trees which provide shade and oxygen, was taking place in Aluva and Desom also.
He sought timely and stringent action against miscreants to prevent such acts in future.
Meanwhile, the Kerala River Protection Council also submitted a petition to the district collector against the filling of paddy fields in the district.
This include the 30 acres of paddy field on the Aluva-Chowara Patturkunnu road and 10 acres in the custody of a private rice mill owner at Vellarappalli Thekkumbhagam.
Council vice-president Prof S.Seetharaman said that the mining of alluvial soil, the top soil of the paddy field, which is in great demand outside, was causing a great deal of ecological damage. This portion is then filled with different kinds of waste, he said.
