Saigal Joseph passes away

Noted actor and singer Joseph Rodriquez alias Saigal Joseph died at his residence here on Saturday.
He was 81 and is survived by wife Tresa and children Gilda Mary and Christopher Antony.

Saigal, who had shared the screen with greats like Shivaji Ganesan and MGR, had acted in over 500 films in Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu.

It was Shivaji who first called him ‘Saigal’ on hearing him render So ja rajakumari’ in the same style as sung by the legendary singer K. L. Saigal.

The native of Palluruthy had entered the world of cinema through theatre. Raman Ethanai Ramanadi, a 1970 release, was one of his popular roles.

Actors Mammootty, Innocent, Idavela Babu, theatre artists Kochin Varghese, Nelson Fernandez, music director Arjun Master, Union minister K. V. Thomas, minister K. Babu were among those who paid homage to Saigal. His funeral will be held at St. Mary’s Church cemetery in Palluruthy at 10 am on Sunday.
