Rs 500 cr for cleaning city canals
Water Resources minister P. J. Joseph on Friday said that projects worth Rs 500 crore will be implemented to clear the Kochi canals of wastes dumped into them and facilitate water transport through them.
He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the regional data centre and water quality testing centre at Kakkanad community hall.
“There are four main canals in the city — Edappally canal, Thevara- Perandoor Canal, Market Canal and Karanakkodam canal — all of which need to be cleaned effectively and also urgently,” he said.
The meeting held in the presence of chief minister Oommen Chandy the other day had already sanctioned Rs 70 crore to clean the Edappally canal.
The projects mainly focused on raising the height of the bridges, ensuring free flow of water and strengthening the sides of the canal. Steps would be taken to remove silt deposited on the opening of canals to backwater.
