Row over standing counsel in MGU
The syndicate meeting of the MG University witnessed dramatic scenes on Wednesday with members demanding the removal of the standing counsel of the varsity and the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Rajan Gurukkal, opposing it.
In the morning, as soon as the syndicate was convened, the UDF sy- ndicate members deman-ded that the standing counsel be removed and a new one be posted.
However, the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Rajan Gurukkal refused this and the VC, PVC and the Registrar trooped out of the meeting.
Later, the syndicate members gheraoed the VC at his chamber and shouted slogans, following which the VC sought some time to consider the issue.
By noon the meeting was again convened by the VC. He agreed to have T. S.Shaji moved out of the office of the standing counsel. The syndicate then appointed Jacob Varghese as the new standing counsel.
The syndicate endorsed the motion proposed by member Dr M.C.Dileep Kumar to regularise the appointment of principals in 16 minority colleges, on which the VC had been allegedly putting off a decision for the past couple of years.
The syndicate refused to take a decision on the teachers’ appointments made by the Vice-Chancellor, a case, which was dragged to the High Court also.
It refused to heed the VC’s suggestion either to accept or reject the appointments. The members said they needed more time to study the issue and deferred the matter to a later date.
