Rotarians boost cancer facility

The General Hospital, which is basking in a new image with a slew of renovation projects, is set to become a relief point for cancer patients, as a project is in the pipeline to give the cancer care section a facelift.

Minister V.S. Sivakumar will officially inaugurate on Sunday some of the projects that have been implemented. To top it all, the Rotary Club of Cochin West has now come forward to make the cancer care division a state-of-the-art one. Preliminary discussions have been held in this regard. The services of ren-owned oncologist Dr V.P. Gangadharan are being roped in for the implementation of the project.

“The initial outlay for the project is Rs 30 lakh, and in the subsequent phases another Rs 20 lakh will be spent with the help of other Rotary Clubs to set up an air-conditioned cancer care facility with all facilities and modern equipment. Our aim is for setting up a facility next only to the Regio-nal Cancer Centre,” said Joshy Cyriac, member of Ro-tary-Cochin West and convener of the Rotary project.

There will be separate sections for radiation therapy, palliative care, chemo-therapy, cancer ICU and an in-patients ward at the new cancer care facility. The current women’s wing will be converted into the chemo ward for admitting 30 patients from the current 10-bed facility.

“Recl-ining chairs too will be provided. Dr Junaid has been launching the hospital into the big league and we decided to put in our mite,” said Joshy.

Dr Gangadharan asked the Rotarians to sustain the facility for long by ensuring sufficient personnel for the care of the patients, to which they agreed.
