Rail cops set up honey traps to nab thieves
The next time you find an unattended bag or suitcase in the compartment of a train or on the railway platform, think twice before picking it up.
If at all you cannot resist your temptation, remember to go straight to the stationmaster’s office with it and hand it over to the railway staff.
The bag could be a trap set up by the railway cops to catch thieves and also create awareness among rail passengers about the dangers in picking up unattended bags.
The new drive of the railway police has been introduced against the backdrop of the increasing incidence of thefts in trains.
The threat of a possible terror attack in the railway sector also prompted railway officials to initiate the drive so that people would be aware of unattended bags and inform authorities about it.
“We conduct the drive once in a while. It’s not to brand anyone as a thief, but to create awareness. We have also been advising the cleaning staff to keep an eye on unattended bags and not pick them up
carelessly,” said a top railway source.
DC had recently tried to catch the railways’ attention by leaving a bag unattended at Ernakulam South Railway Station.
The railway police has also stepped up vigil at stations and in trains.
The department has come up with a series of security measures to counter all possible attempts by
miscreants to disrupt the smooth functioning of the railways.
