Perseverance key to clearing the bar
On Sunday, perseverance paid off for actor-producer Balachandra Menon and 73-year-old P.M. Kuriakose.
They finally enrolled themselves as advocates after labouring for a long time — 22 and 16 years respectively, to be precise.
“I’m dedicating this moment to God Almighty,” cried an emotional Menon, the first of the 376 candidates to enroll before a jam-packed audience at the High Court.
Though he has every intention of making his presence felt in the legal fraternity, Menon asserts that it won’t be at the expense of his film activities. “I intend to start my practice, but only in my free time,” the actor made it clear.
He also has a certain vision for the advocate in him. “I won’t lie at any cost. I’ll also do my best to see that the ‘advocate characters’ in my films have qualities like ‘Vilambaram’ (sharp brain) and ‘Karyam Nisaram’ (simplicity and honesty).”
Which brings us to 73-year-old P.M. Kuriakose, the oldest among the lot to get enrolled. He too could not hide his joy after accomplishing “his mission”.
“I had passed LLB back in 1968 but then I had already got in SAIL. After my retirement in 1996, I was determined to don the black coat one day and argue on behalf of deprived and financially backward clients,” said the retired Steel Authority of India official.
Besides the above-mentioned two, some of the other big names who were enrolled, were Lisamma Augustine, wife of ex-MP Dr Sebastian Paul, and Gayathri Krishnan, daughter of Justice N.K. Balakrishnan.
Current Acting Chief Justice Manjula Chellur presided over the function.
