Painting first Biennale red
Artistic activity will be evident not just inside the venues of the Kochi Muziris Biennale in Fort Kochi, but also outside.
Walls of major buildings that lead to the sites have become canvases for the creative outpourings of various artists from Baroda University and an enthusiastic Swiss couple, Louis Werder and Maya Hottarek.
The latter did some interesting work last month on the walls of the Aspinwall factory. Louis Werder is a graphic designer and Maya Hottarek is a poly designer. Their wall painting is about the brain and heart and what links the two.
For Maya the “brain and heart are like a couple and you always have to use them together.” Says Louis, “A part of this art piece might have happened in every person's mind.”
They are happy to have contributed in some way to the Biennale, but as their visas expire on December 10, two days before the biennale begins, they may not be around to see the reaction to their artwork.
“We wanted to do this because we really wished to leave something for India, to do something here so that we can come back and feel at home,” they say.
Coming from a country where art in every form is popular, the couple is confident that with this event, art will get popular here too so that “we can come for the next biennale”.
