New parking policy for Kochi
The city, which is running desperately short of parking space, will have a parking policy within the next five months.
The corporation council meeting held on Friday approved the draft proposal submitted by CIVITAS Urban Solutions for revising the parking policy in the city.
As the council approved the proposal, the agency will soon conduct a detailed study on the specific demographic and mobility pattern in the Kochi CBD (central business district) area and the new policy would be formulated within five months.
The parking policy is mandated by the state government as part of the Automobile Parking Policy for all towns and cities, envisaged in the reforms under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
The Traffic Regulatory Committee chaired by mayor Tony Chammany will scrutinize the policy recommendations after which it would be implemented.
