‘Nataka Kaalam’ begins in Kochi
It’s ‘nataka kaalam’ (theatre time) in the city this Onam. Starting Sunday, it’s going to be a 10-day drama treat every evening at theDurbar Hall Ground.
Starting with Kavalam Narayana Panicker’s Kallurutti there will be a whole range right from the social play of VT Bhattathiripad’s Adukkalayilninnu Arangathekku and Vaikkom Mohammed Basheer’s Janmadinam to After the Silence.
Organised by the District Tourism Promotion Council in association with A Centre for Theatre, it is for the first time that the city is playing host to such a drama festival, according to district collector Sheikh Pareeth.
Kavalam, whose play Kallururtti was performed on Sunday night, said that the drama was about a primitive society on one side and a modern one on the other. He said that plays were special for their colourful communication aspect and the ones selected for this festival had a wide range which included even the most modern ones. Such efforts would go a long way in giving theatre a rebirth.
Actor Revathy said that this venture should be turned into an annual calendar event so that Onam holidays would also be an ideal time for theatre buffs from across the state and even the country, to interact.
She said that her association with theatre had helped her learn the techniques of acting and each performance of hers had given her a very high level of satisfaction. “I got this only from theatre”, she added.
