Metro crosses hurdles

With the Kochi Metro altering its original route plan in the Vytilla-Tripunithura section, two of the main issues, those of land acquisition and heightening of the metro rail flyover at the busy Vytilla section, have been resolved, according to Kochi Metro Rail Limited managing director, Tom Jose.

The state government formally approved the suggestion of a Kochi metro station inside the Vytilla Hub. According to the new plan, the metro rail will take a left course, nearly 500 metres ahead of the busy Vytilla Junction (when coming from the Palarivattom side) and from the Hub, it will go straight to the Silver Sand Island (near the sub-station and Children’s Park), before proceeding to Peta Junction.

“Initially, the metro flyover was planned over the skywalk at much height. Now with the changed route plan, there is no need for that. The metro track will pass through the area at the normal height.

This is because the track will take a left turn to the Hub around 500 meters ahead of the Junction where a flyover and skywalk projects of the NHAI is going to be implemented,” Jose said at an interactive session held at the Social Service Centre at Anjumuri.

Earlier, there was some confusion with the NHAI over the designs but now that has been made simpler. The new route has also made the land acquisition process simpler as the parties involved are few.

The KMRL has asked RITES to conduct a feasibility study of using wider coaches than what was initially planned. “We’ve done after directions from the urban development ministry to use 3.2 metre wide coaches instead of the 2.7 planned earlier.” he said.

South RoB goes 4-lane

Talks are in the final stages over reconstructing and converting the vital South RoB into a four-way lane, crucial to decongesting the city, for which government nod will be given soon, minister K.Babu said.

The Kochi Metro Project Ltd will be given the work of both SRoB and the Atlantis RoB. The state has already given Rs 48 crore towards land acquisition.

“The soil test, design and dummy of the South RoB project has been completed and final feasibility study is on,” said KMRL MD Tom Jose.
