Mentally challenged youth held for slaying ‘tormentor’
The Kochi Crime Branch police on Sunday, arrested a youth on the charge of killing a security officer on the National Highway near Kannadikkad, here, last November. The arrested was identified as Sarath Das, 20, of Kannadikkad, who killed Sathyan, 40, of Nilanthar in Kannur.
According to the police, Sarath Das, who is mentally challenged, killed Sathyan in a fit of rage, as the latter was in the regular habit of teasing and humiliating the accused. Sathyan was found severely injured on the highway on November 7, last.
He succumbed to his injuries by the time the police took him to hospital. Though the local police closed the case considering it a road accident, the post-mortem results hinted at a murder.
After months of investigation, the case was handed over to the Crime Branch in April. The CB zeroed in on the accused by moving in the direction of an illicit relationship the dead man had. Sathyan had an affair with a woman who lived in the upper floor of Sarath’s house.
“Sathyan used to tease Sarath by calling him ‘dumb’ whenever he came to the woman’s house. When Sarath got an opportunity, he vented his anger on the man and killed him”, said V.K. Raju, the detective inspector of the CB, who led the investigation.
The accused will be presented before the court on Monday. Sub inspectors Yousuf, Ashokan, Prabhu and civil police officers Sirajuddeen, Joshy C. Abraham and Anuraj were the other members on the team.
