Marine Drive: Phase II to be put on fast lane
Two agencies will be entrusted within a week to conduct a preliminary stu-dy about the second phase development of Marine Drive, said N. Venugopal, chairman of Greater Coch-in Development Authority, while speaking to media persons after visiting the proposed project site here on Sunday.
The agencies will prepare a preliminary project report and environment impact assessment of the second phase expansion. Government agencies will prepare the EIA report and preliminary project report which would be submitted to the state government.
Once, the reports are approved by the government, tender will be invited for preparing the detailed project report (DPR). The second phase development has got the state government’s in-principle approval last week.
“The Marine Drive second phase will definitely boost the future development of the city. Apart from walkway, shopping malls, convention centre and trade centres will be part of the project. Reve-nue from this can be used for other infrastructure development schemes like ring road project,” said N. Venugopal.
According to the GCDA chairman, illegal backwater reclamation can be prevented with the opening of Marine Drive second phase.
The second phase development, stretched to 10.5 kilometres, from Gos-hree Island Development Authority land near High Court to Varappuzha container road, involves reclamation of nearly 600 acres of backwaters.
