Kochi needs to plug chinks in armour
As Kochi prepares to host a security review meeting to counter hi- tech criminals on Friday, its police force is still struggling to deal with every day crime.
It has had little luck in containing the ganja and drug mafia, the goondaism in West Kochi, and checking criminal activity among migrant labourers and the regular attacks on foreign tourists.
Although the special branch police in association with the city police has busted several ganja and drug rings, the source of the business still eludes it.
The police seems to have little clue about who runs the network which distributes ganja to agents here.
While the Collectorate in the city witnessed a blast and railway stations, shopping malls and crowded places are vulnerable to similar attacks , little has been done to enhance security in public places .
The move to consider installing close circuit cameras in busy areas could come in handy.
“There are a few concerns regarding the drug mafia and the lack of security in public places.
These issues will also be discussed at the review meeting and we will definitely come up with effective ways to deal with them,” said inspector general of Central Zone police, K. Padmakumar.
