Kochi to host coconut fest
The global financial turmoil, climate change and carbon credits will be some of the topics for discussion at Cocotech, the international coconut festival being organised here from July 2 to 6.
Organised by the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC) and the union government, under the auspices of the Coconut Development Board, the meet with the theme ‘Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development of the Coconut Industry’, will see more than 200 delegates from across the globe, said CDB chairman T.K. Jose.
The meeting proposes to have a series of technical sessions and will look at new technologies and research and development update on coconut-based farming systems, product diversification and processing, including the health attributes of coconut.
Mr Jose said that though the country enjoys a comfortable position in production and productivity, it lags in processing and exports.
Sri Lanka which has just 3.95 lakh hectares under cultivation, compared to India’s 18.94 and a production of just 2,853 million nuts against India’s 15,730 million, has a total export value of $253 million against India’s $178.2 million.
The meet will aim at finding a solution to these problems and will have experts from the corporate sector too as resource persons to address the delegates.
