INS Venduruthy turns 69
INS Venduruthy, popularly known as Naval Base, celebrated its 69th birth anniversary on Thursday.
“Kochi is proud of the Navy and its service to the nation.
The Kochi corporation and the Navy have always helped each other in serving the citizens. Because of the very presence of the naval base, we feel secure, especially in the coastal security scenario,” said mayor Tony Chammany, who was the chief guest at the celebrations held at the base.
Before cutting the anniversary cake, Commodore M.R. Ajaykumar, Commanding Officer, acknowledged the timely response of the corporation to the various needs of the naval personnel.
This was followed by entertainment programmes put up by the staff which was followed by the traditional community feast “badakhana”.
INS Venduruthy as the Depot Ship of the Southern Naval Command flies the Flag of the Commander-in-Chief and was commissioned on June 23, 1943, as Her Majesty Indian Ship (HMIS) Venduruthy.
The establishment which houses all the premier training schools of the navy has a wide range of responsibilities starting from security, to the management of the 1000-acre naval base.
The Commanding Officer of INS Venduruthy as the Naval Officer-in-Charge, Kerala, is also responsible for the coastal security of the state.
