Heavy rains lash Kollam district
Heavy rains lashed the district on Friday night and continued on Saturday morning badly affecting low-lying areas in the city.
Low-lying areas in and around Kollam corporation experienced a flood-like situation as the water did not find an easy flow into the Ashtamudi lake.
Water stagnation was experienced in places like Pullikkada, Asramam, Link Road, Uliyakovil, Kuravanpalam, Mangadu, Thankasseri, Vaady and Neendakara.
The most affected area was Pullikkada through which the Kallada Irrigation canal passes. The canal was blocked as the construction of drains is going on at various places.
District Collector P.G. Thomas visited the affected areas and directed the departments concerned to take immediate steps to drain away the stagnant water.
Heavy rains have affected the pre-monsoon cleaning process. “Effective measures are being taken by the departments concerned to drain the stagnant water and to control the spread of water-borne diseases,” said G. Lalu, deputy mayor.
