He can count letters in words in a flash!

When spellings can defeat people, Geordie Job Pottas can tell you the exact number of alphabets that make up a word in seconds, and hopes this will win him a place in the Limca Book of World Records.

A law graduate, in his twenties, Geordie can also tell the exact number of alphabets in a sentence or a paragraph in record time.

At the Ernakulam Press Club where he appeared before a panel of judges to attempt a Limca record, he rattled off the number of alphabets in 99 out of 100 words, dazzling the audience and the media with his performance.

The words, each with 12, 14, 16, 18 or 20 alphabets, were presented to him from two lists prepared by the panel members.

The only word Geordie failed to count was ‘anti-environmentalist,’ but completed the first set of words in three minutes and five seconds and the second in three minutes, 25 seconds. In an earlier attempt, Geordie had set a record of two minutes and 11 seconds.

The judging panel included journalist Tho-mas Mathew Parackal, former head of the Eng-lish department, Maha-rajas college, Dr. G. Ran-garajan and SCMS professor A.V. Jose.

The video of Geordie’s performance and other documents will be sent to Limca for its consideration.

If Geordie, who has demonstrated his uncanny skill at various events and bagged several awards, astonishes people, his father, Job Pottas too has his share of admirers as he has already found a place in the Limca Book of World Records for his talent in saying sentences and words in reverse without a pause.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
