HC holds Rs 3 cr on technical grounds
The Kerala High Court registry on Wednesday refused to hand over the Rs 3 crore demand draft submitted before the registrar towards the compensation claims of the victims in the Italian firing case.
A single bench of the Kerala high court had asked the registry to hand over the demand drafts filed by the Italian vessel on Tuesday after disposing of the admiralty suits filed by the victims.
The court disposed of the suits after the victims entered into an agreement with the Republic of Italy. The registry declined to hand over the DD on technical grounds.
An appeal seeking the enhancement of the compensation amount is still pending before a divisional bench of the court.
A divisional bench comprising justices Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan and C.T. Ravikumar had earlier directed the Italian merchant vessel, Enrica Lexie to furnish a bank guarantee of `3 crore before the registrar general of the court.
