HC: consider fee refund for poor students
The Kerala High Court on Tuesday asked the state to consider reimbursing the cost of education poor parents incur, in educating their children in unaided schools affiliated to the CSEB/ICSE.
By providing financial assistance to such students belonging to economically backward sections, the government could save the trouble and finance of opening new schools, the court held.
The court also held that the government could think of such reimbursements as it was not running any CBSE/ICSE affiliated schools.
The court also asked the state to re-structure schools by merging uneconomic ones and those which did not have sufficient students and teachers, with government and aided schools functioning, nearby.
A division bench comprising Justice C.N. Rama-chandran Nair and Justice C.K.Abdul Rehim asked the state to consider these suggestions and inform the court what steps could be initiated in this regard.
The court was dealing with a petition relating to a school in Ponkunnam which had no students. The court asked the Assistant Education Officer to close down the institution.
