Government may resort to ponnumvila on land
Noting that land acquisition process for Kochi Metro project was progressing smoothly, district collector P.I. Sheikh Pareeth on Thursday said the only dispute was regarding the price to be fixed for takeover of the land or buildings to be demolished for which the authorities would resort to ‘ponnumvila' (the rate fixed by the government) or by using emergency powers as a last resort.
“The land acquisition survey has been completed in all sections. On the whole, the work is progressing smoothly and the owners are willing to hand over the land for the ambitious project.
However, dispute remains over land price or buildings to be taken over at some stretches. Talks are on to resolve the crisis but we’ll resort to ponnumvila process so that the project does not get delayed,” the official said when asked about owners demanding up to Rs 1 crore for a cent of land alongside MG Road.
