Focus Point to help choose your stream
For those awaiting class 10 exam results, there is good news. The Higher Education department is rolling out a special programme ‘Focus Point’ to help children choose streams that suit them the best.
“Nowadays, a student has 40 combinations of subjects to choose from. But a study has found that neither children nor parents select streams based on the child’s aptitude.
Through the programme, we’ll assess the children besides informing them and their parents about the scope of each combination of subjects and the respective career prospects,” Dr S. Nazeeb, state co-ordinator, Higher Secondary Career Guidance and Counselling Cell, told Deccan Chronicle.
The programme will be launched simultaneously in all the 14 districts in June and once the 10th exam results are declared, students and parents can avail of the facility free of cost from the ‘Focus Point’ centres.
All government schools will display telephone numbers of the respective centres. “The students and their parents can either visit them directly or call over phone. A direct visit is being encouraged as the students’ aptitude can be gauged by experts,” the official said.
“There was a need for such an initiative as after plus 2, students simply go for the popular streams. This may not do any justice to the student’s calibre and interests,” said Saraswathy Amma, a teacher at Padanilam Higher Secondary School.
About 4,70,100 students appeared for the SSLC examination this year. The results are expected to be out by end of April.
