Fire breaks out at jewellery store
A minor fire broke out at Malabar Gold Jewellery store on the busy MG Road in the city at 2 pm on Wednesday.
Timely intervention by fire personnel averted a major blaze.
No one was injured in the fire.
According to the fire department, the flames completely destroyed a flex panel and spread to the building wall. About 20 fire tenders worked for an hour to bring the fire under control.
Fire force personnel suspect that the fire began at the waste dump near the jewellery store building. However, the store owners reportedly expressed the suspicion that some miscreants must have ignited the fire.
“The allegations by the Malabar Gold were that since they did not take part in the strike organized by a faction of jewelry groups on Wednesday, their showroom was targeted by someone close to the strikers,” an official of the Fire department said. Fresh match boxes found near the waste dump added to the suspicion, firemen said.
The building wall embellishments were destroyed in the fire. As there was no complaint, police did not file any case.
