Diocese shows way in organ donation
Kottappuram Bishop Dr Joseph Karikkassery and 92 priests in the diocese on Sunday pledged to donate their organs.
The pledge was taken during the valedictory celebrations of the silver jubilee of the diocese and in the presence of Vatican nuncio Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio at St Michael's Cathedral.
“This may inspire thousands of the faithful in the diocese to follow suit, and it is the best expression of love by someone for fellow human beings,” said Fr Rockey Roby Kalathil, spokesman of the diocese, when asked about the decision.
The consent letter was handed over to MD Varghese, senior journalist, by Fr George Elanjikkal during the function.
The diocese also distributed 50 houses to poor members of the church. The keys of the houses were handed over to Fr George Padassery by union minister K.V. Thomas. PWD minister V.K. Ebrahim Kunju launched the diocese’s drive to collect funds to support the higher education of poor students.
Archbishop Pennacchio, in his address, praised the functioning of Kottapuram Integrated Development Society (KIDS) formed by the diocese for social service.
