Collector bans digging of roads
District collector P.I. Sheikh Pareeth, who is also the District Magistrate, on Thursday, issued a ban on digging up of roads in the district during monsoon.
The order came in the wake of roads being dug up by various agencies even after the onset of monsoon.
The collector also ordered that the roads which were dug up be restored to their original condition. He said that action would be taken against those who failed to comply with this order..
Meanwhile, complaints are mounting from different parts of the city about the deteriorating condition of roads which were tarred just before the monsoon by the PWD and the corporation.
These include the Chilavannoor road from Elamkulam, roads at Palarivattom, Menaka and the one connecting Thammanam with Vyttila.
Huge potholes are coming up on these roads. The condition of the recently-built Edappally railway overbridge too is pretty bad, with numerous potholes surfacing every day.
The residents of these areas say that it has been less than four months since all these roads were repaired.
Motorists say that traffic blocks are caused in these places mainly due to the pathetic condition of the roads.
The flanks of the roads that were dug up for laying pipelines by agencies like the KWA and the KSEB have not been restored to their original condition.
This complicates things for pedestrians too. Though the mayor had promised speedy action to restore the roads, nothing has been done so far in places like MG Road and Elamakkara.
