Canal cleaning nears completion
The cleaning of the Thevara-Perandoor (TP) canal, being carried out by the Kerala State Inland Navigation Corporation (KSINC), is nearing completion. Sources from Kochi Metro Rail, the funding agency that had handed the work over to the KSINC, said that the cleaning work would be completed within two days.
“The canal cleaning is in its final phase. Desilting is progressing and the major work remaining is dredging the mouth of the canal where it joins the Vembanad backwaters in Thevara. Silt from the 500 metre mouth will be removed,” said sources at KMRL.
It is hoped that with the cleaning of the canal, several parts of the city will be relieved from water-logging during the monsoon.
At present, the desilting of the railway culverts and the culvert in Kaloor, which are major contributors to water-logging, are proceeding in a planned manner. There are 21 railway culverts on the stretch starting from Perandoor Bridge to Thevara Atlantis.
Meanwhile, as the corporation is yet to complete the pre-monsoon cleaning work, silt and waste from other canals and small drains is being moved to the TP canal. A major polluter of the canal is the abattoir in Kaloor.
