Bid on scribe: 2 DySPs named
The CBI investigating the attempt made on the life of journalist V.B. Unnithan, filed a chargesheet against two deputy superintendents of police, M. Santhosh Nair and Abdul Rasheed and three others on Thursday, accusing them of hatching a conspiracy to kill him after he exposed the unholy nexus between high ranking police officers and gangsters in Kollam.
Mr Unnithan was attacked at Shasthamcotta Junction in Kollam on April 16, 2011, but survived. The CBI said the two police officers concerned had hired Container Santhosh to kill him and met in Goa to plot the murder.
While DySP Santhosh Nair e-mailed two photographs of the journalist to Container Santhosh for identification, he in turn engaged Happy Rajesh who assigned three men, Mahesh, V.R. Anand and S. Shafeeque to do the job, the CBI said.
The agency was able to crack the case with the help of Container Santhosh who turned approver. His deposition proved vital in framing charges of attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy, and voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of dangerous weapons. against the police officers and their alleged accomplices.
CBI ASP, S. Jaikumar, who filed the chargesheet, however, did not mention Happy Rajesh as he was murdered soon after the failed attack on the journalist.
