Baby with Down’s Syndrome found abandoned in Kochi
A newborn baby girl with Down’s syndrome was found abandoned by the roadside in the city early in the morning. The infant was shifted to the general hospital where she was put under observation in the neo-natal intensive care unit.
According to hospital sources, the baby weighed just 1.4 kg and the low weight was the only cause for concern. She was found in front of a shop near Krishna Lodge on SRM Road at about 6.45 am in a bamboo basket. Passers-by immediately alerted the police who took the newborn to the hospital.
“There was a feeding bottle, additional sets of clothes and a few pairs of socks in the basket. No one has come to claim the child so far”, a hospital spokesman said.
As soon as the child gained enough weight and would be declared medically fit, she would be handed over to the child welfare committee. It was also suspected that the child was abandoned as she was a Down’s syndrome baby, said the spokesman.
Meanwhile, the police also suspect that the child was abandoned by someone who had come to the city by train early in the morning. A case has been registered and a probe is on.
