The Virtual Superstar
For better or for worse, the single ‘Friday’ has made 13-year-old Rebecca Black a tween sensation overnight. All she had to do was upload her self- penned novelty tune heavily loaded with auto-tune and ironically tagged with an abysmal video onto YouTube, and BANG! The next morning and 60 million hits later Rebecca Black became a star.
According to folks from YouTube, Black’s video is the “4th most discussed video” in the website's history. The music video is a viral sensation, spreading like a plague of tarty lyrics and awkward pre-teen dancing. Even more lacking than the song’s musical discordance is the shockingly idiotic lyrics. “Yesterday was Thursday; today is Friday; we, we, we, so excited; we so excited; we gonna have a ball today. Tomorrow is Saturday and Sunday comes afterwards….”
“It is the lamest song ever, but it’s good to yank at with a bunch of friends! It is unbelievably hilarious, and the worst aspect of the song is Rebecca herself, so untalented that even a liberal dosage of autotune couldn’t save her,” says Rocky Lama a17-year-old rapper. This is not the first time a tween star is born out of virtual space. Remember the13-year-old boy who made waves and had young hearts yearning across the globe with his signature bangs and song Baby?
“Justin Bieber’s performances made him a world-renowned superstar overnight, but he has shown consistency over the last five years though many musicians hate his quick fame. However, what we have with Rebecca is just a miniscule moment of fame for all the wrong reasons. She is just a pun and isn’t going to last,” says chirpy drummer Chris.
Nevertheless, such online meddling is proving to be an effectual medium to be noticed globally without shelling out your entire bank balance and more. Wilbur Sargunaraj is India’s YouTube superstar. The performer-cum-singer-cum-drummer and a self-professed superstar from down south became a hit after shifting his work-base onto the online medium. It was only after this that he got noticed. Today, he has a huge fan following from all over the world.
Well, whatever the outcome may, it’s definitely more than worth a shot. Because the grapevine has it that following such success stories, music moguls have started scouring websites for the next big thing.
