Students look forward to college and freedom

The class XII results are out and students are gearing up to begin college life. To many, with college comes freedom, and this freedom also represents being able to do things that were previously banned. Chennai’s college going crowd is now looking up different ways to mark a ‘rite of passage’, like colouring their hair, a piercing or even a tattoo.

Vinitha V.T., Who has just passed out of St. Dominics Anglo. Indian Higher Secondary School is looking forward to being free, “The first thing I did once done with school was to get my ear pierced. I got about six piercings on one ear and three on the other. I also got a funky haircut with layers and steps, as it was not allowed in my school. The one thing about college that I am most looking forward to, is the freedom to dress as I like. I also plan to get a couple of streaks of burgundy on my hair.”
Others feel that they can now pursue hobbies and work on skills that they did not have time for during school. Sujit Nair, of SBOA School, says, “I would like to get a grip on my guitar lessons. I have not been free for my music earlier because of the exam pressure and would really like to dedicate some time to it. Apart from that, I would also like to start improving my French. And lastly, I really want to learn to drive and get my licence. This is one of the things that I have been looking forward to doing since I finished school.”
There are also some who get nail art done, as most schools prohibit students from growing their nails and using nail polish. Irum Favaz who has just completed her schooling from CSI Bain School, says, “The first thing I will do is to get my driving licence. During our school days, we were always restricted from growing nails and using nail polish and this used to be quite sad for me, as I really love to try different types of nail art and also use a lot of nail accessories. Now that I will be in college soon, I look forward to the freedom I will have, to do as I wish with my nails. I also look forward to not wearing uniforms, which means that I can dress as I like. I will also get myself a really nice phone. With all this done, I think I will be all set to join college life.”
