When it comes to music, teens are pretty enthusiastic. With many wanting to learn musical instruments, the net seems to have emerged as the perfect choice. Many young netizens are now taking online music lessons through various websites, which they find an easier and fun way to learn music and it is also a money saver.
Smitashish Sengupta, an engineering student says, “It is so cool to get free guitar lessons and one doesn’t have to spend any money. I started learning tabs from Ultimateguitar.com. With time I have learnt to play Paranoid by Black Sabbath and Planet Caravan by Pantera. Initially, my parents were little apprehensive about my guitar lessons, but they bought me a new guitar, seeing how much I had progressed. Now, sometimes, I even play with my friends’ band, which has also improved my vocal practice.”
The most popular music learning websites among teens are GuitarPrinciples.com, GuitarNoise.com, GuitarMasterClass.net and FreeLicks.net, where even a beginner can start with easy navigation, tapping technique lessons and the video library, where one can learn to play blues, jazz or any other genre on the guitar along with popular mentors and guitarists.
Karan Singh, a Class 11 student, who learned to play the acoustic guitar during his Board exams, agrees. “As a stress buster, during exams, I would take out some time to unwind from studies and learning the acoustic from www.jamplay.com was really destressing. Now I can play Neon by John Mayer and Highway to Hell by AC/DC and I love to give lessons to my friends, it’s great fun. I’ve also learned to play rock music on my guitar from personal websites of popular guitarists Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen.”
Besides online guitar lessons, many are also going for easy piano lessons, online. Piano lover, Vikas Awasthi reveals, “As online music lessons are little time consuming, they are best when your goal is to start playing your favourite songs, quickly. I always wanted to learn to play pop and rock songs on the piano with as little effort as possible. After going over some basic piano concepts (i.e. piano layout, scales and chords), the lessons take you right into playing your very first musical piece. I learnt to play popular tunes like Let It Be, (Sittin’ on) the Dock of the Bay, and many more. The lessons are easy to follow with the help of detailed illustrations and sound files.”
Aakriti Mittal, a college student took piano lessons from pianobychords.com and pianonanny.com even after learning from a music school.
She says, “I took up piano when I was in school, and ended up totally lost and bewildered with theory. On a total whim whilst Christmas shopping, I bought myself a keyboard with the intention to try again. In few days, I tried some different sites and worked my way through the beginner classes.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
