Jealousy stirs trouble in gal pals’ paradise
In life there are situations when you feel trusting your best friend was probably your worst mistake, as she backstabbed you and marred your trust at a point when you needed her the most. In times like these, it feels like these women are just out of a reality show or maybe a Gossip Girl episode, as they were plotting and playing dirty games to ruin your life. No wonder they say that women are the worst enemies of women as they can get really nasty and mean if they don’t like you.
Recently, Kelly Valen wrote a personal essay for the New York Times ‘Modern Love’ column titled, “My Sorority Pledge? I Swore Off Sisterhood.” In the column, Valen detailed how the cruelty she experienced in college caused her to avoid friendships with other women. She drafted a survey among 3,000 women and came up with her book Twisted Sisterhood: Unraveling the Dark Legacy of Female Friendships that talks about the same.
MBA student Ankita Seth recalls how during placements girls in her hostel had a huge fight because some of them couldn’t clear the interview. She says, “A girl in my hostel burnt her roommate’s notes just before the exams so that she couldn’t study. They had a big fight and the case went to the principal. The jealousy factor among women is so strong that once you are a victim, you forget what is good and bad.”
Some girls feel women act mean and jealous when they feel insecure. Rashi Verma, a 20-year-old B. Com student opines. “I feel women get insecure when they see their friends doing well in career or love life. They take it as a threat to their own existence and start plotting to bring the other woman down. Be it academics, career or life whenever they see another woman as competition, they get fearful and act in a nasty manner.”
Agrees Ananya Mishra, a DU student who feels that women tend to complicate things and make relationships bitter. She says, “many times women tend of fight on petty things and the enmity increases so much that they can’t stand each other. Instead of clarifying things, they complicate matters and try to outwit each other. In most cases of domestic violence, atrocities are committed by one women against another. Be it a case of dowry or petty quarrels on customs and traditions, women instead of offering support always tend to get vicious.”
