A girl for all seasons

She is cute, studious, brainy and more of a geek. But to many Emma Watson is a sex symbol and fashion icon. Even Emma’s Harry Potter alter ego Hermione Granger is no plain Jane. She has beaten pop stars Cheryl Cole and Katy Perry to become the top role model for teenage girls. But what is it about “Hermione” that they adore?

Maybe it is her level-headedness or unpretentious nature that has appealed to youngsters. “Emma doesn’t fall in the league of Lindsay Lohan, Rihanna or Paris Hilton. These starlets will do anything for publicity. But Emma is classy and has a great sense of style and is also a woman of substance. That is something that makes her cool and attractive,” says Mahoor Mir, 18, a student.
“Even though her explicit photographs were leaked on the Internet, no one believes that she was behind the mischief. She is sincere, and won’t indulge in cheap publicity stunts,” she adds.
“I love the way she dresses. From her traditional hairdo in the Potter series to her cool and sexy pixie cut, Emma looks like a million bucks. She’s original and a trendsetter,” says Neeru Kaur, 19, a fashion student.
Neeru is impressed by Emma’s Burberry ad, where the 21-year-old is flaunting a well cut trench coat. “It’s a very mature outfit to be worn at her age, and she carries it with élan,” Neeru adds.
Many agree that Emma doesn’t take the diktats of Hollywood seriously. “She’s confident enough to grace a red-carpet evening in a British-style cardigan. Like seasoned actresses, she wore a golden dress, instead of the regular black one for a fashion do. She’s not a fashion victim, but a true diva,” says Shikha Davessar, a professional working with a Delhi-based ad agency.
Can you imagine a star, after succeeding claiming to be bored of the glam world and effortlessly getting back to student life? At a time when youngsters crib about their pocket money, Emma has set an example there too.
She admitted to feeling “sick” when a few of years ago she found out her net worth (a staggering £20 million). “Instead of going on a binge, she took a money management course. I can’t think of a teen celebrity who is as wise as her,” says Divya Kaul, a die-hard Potter fan.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
