Easy bucks online

The IT-savvy, most of them Gen Y nerds, have never had it so good! If parents are stingy with pocket-money, the worldwide web is offering moolah… virtually for the asking! The Internet has become an avenue to earn that extra buck for the latest swagger gizmo or those killer pumps.
A self-confessed internet addict and a software engineer by profession, Benjamin Alex opines, “It is the most legitimate, easy and hassle-free way to earn money, sitting at home, with flexible hours! This combination is a real hook for teens. The money is good and usually on an hourly basis. Options like online editing, copywriting, client servicing, data collections and the like are available. This concept is quickly picking up among teens as the main requirements are a fair knowledge of computers and fast access to the website.”
With an ever-expanding list of wants and with needs, teens are grabbing at this opportunity to keep their wallets padded. “I have an allotted sum of pocket money that I get every week, but at times is it not enough. But whenever I am short on cash, I just log online and pull an all-nighter on the website I work for,” says 19-year-old Nithya Ravi, who spends her earnings mainly on the latest in the fashion from online shops. She beams, “It’s nice that I don't have to ask mum and dad for my extra expenses. Thanks to the worldwide web, I can shop cheap online and also make oodles of money!”
“It’s a great way to network and build contacts, especially with online advertisement and investment club,” says internet whiz Omi Das, 16. “You get to meet so many teenagers from around the world, similar, yet different. It’s super fun to chat, exploring ideas, and learning about their culture, while making money on the side.”
“Kids nowadays are on the computer all day anyway, on Facebook or playing games, or watching a movie. It’s good that amid this, they actually get work online and earn pocket-money,” says Nancy Jayakumar. “Along with preparing them for the job market and office scenario, such early financial independence is good, as they start valuing money more.” Laughing, she adds that it helps to have her son “at home, without the worry of him being out, and actually helping with petty chores around the house.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
