Comic(s) need no timing!

Every Tinkle fan across the world would’ve been saddened by its founder Anant Pai’s demise. Having grown up reading about Suppandi’s stupidity, Shikari Shabmu’s laziness and Kalia the clever crow, Tinkle’s been an integral part of their growing up years for many. But growing older doesn’t mean that you stop reading comics. There are college students who still read comics like Tintin and Archie and don’t feel embarrassed about it!
“I enjoy reading DC comics like Superman, Batman, Spiderman and Green Lantern. I read all of them online, my favourite has to be the Superman-Spiderman combo called Dr Doom and the Parasite,” says college student Abhijit Ravindra, adding, “The combo is when two superheroes are featured in one story. The combination of Batman and Superman depicts Batman coming out in the night and Superman during the day. These books are interesting!” Being a commerce student, Abhijit feels that comics are a great way to advertise. “You have pictures and information together. You can also use them as manuals or guides for cell phones,” says Abhijit, who doesn’t mind telling his friends that he still reads comics. “Everyone used to read them once upon a time,” he adds.
For 19-year-old engineering student Pranjali Pai, Tinkle is the comic that she still loves to read. “I love all the stories and they remind me of my childhood days. I still get my copy of Tinkle home every month. Suppandi’s stupidity and his jokes are hilarious!” she says. Pranjali’s been reading Tinkle since she was seven and still has all the old copies of the magazine. “Shikari Shambu and Tantri the Mantri are nice too,” says Pranjali, adding, “I still re-read the Gotham comics that I have like X-Men, Scooby-Doo and The Powerpuff Girls.”
Archie and Tinkle are the comics that B.Sc student Nivedita Mohan still reads regularly. “I’ve been reading Archie since I was in class five. Since it’s based on college life, I like the series a lot. Betty’s my favourite character — she’s humble and sweet. As for Jughead, the way he makes a mess of everything is so funny!” she says. When it comes to Tinkle, Shikari Shambu, Tantri The Mantri, Ramu Shamu and Butterfingers are her favourite characters. “Shambu’s not brave at all, but he ends up doing the right thing! utterfingers is so careless and I love the way he talks,” she says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
