They demand concentration, skill, patience, and are as challenging as any tech-driven sport. The difference, however, lies in the fact that one need not have to sit in front of a TV or constantly press a remote to play them. Yes, we are talking about board games. Retaining its popularity among teenagers, the concept of board games is becoming a must-do for youngsters during the summer vacation. While some are picking up board games that hone memory, others are indulging in management and entrepreneurship-friendly ones.
“I love playing The Da Vinci Game. Three to six players can play this game and as my friends say it’s ‘the game of symbols’. I have a thing for ancient symbols and secrets. May be because of this, I got it as a gift on my 15th birthday. I have made it a point to play the game everyday, if not with friends than with my cousins,” opines 17-year-old Meren Lemtur.
“Board games are great for teaching children a variety of things. The most important thing, I feel is that my children are learning is patience and teamwork. We usually play Hungry Hungry Hippos whenever we get time,” opines Rohini P. Goswami, mother of 11-year-old Myra.
Gone are the days when one used to identify board games with only ladder, scrabble and boggle, but today the market has undergone considerable change.
Says Harish Upadhay, owner of a toy shop in Rajouri Garden, “Today’s parents ask for board games keeping in mind, certain subjects they want their children to master. For example, if you want your child to learn about life’s realities like insurance, business and earning, Life is the game which I would suggest you should buy.”
Psychiatrists are of the opinion that with board games one is almost always sitting in a circle, facing one another, which is much better for family bonding and interaction.
Says psychiatrist Bristi Borkakoty, “A lot can be said about the face-to-face time you have with your children. These times are important for families to bond and enjoy each other’s company. I highly recommend arranging family game nights with your kids, no matter what age they are. Playing regular board games also develops problem solving skills, confidence and logical reasoning. In the long run, they also boost memory.”
