Off the beaten path
With a zillion career options and an array of paths to get there, teens today are smartening up. Investing their time in vocational courses and extra-curriculars that will add to their resume, teenagers are fast fleeing from predictable classes.
Ankit Aman, a class 10 student says, “I want to get into animation and so I have already started my caricature lessons. Starting early provides you with the opportunity to decide whether if you still want to continue in the field or not. And with so many new options available, youngsters can just follow their heart and do what they like.” With schools and colleges providing options to students, they are choosing their fields wisely. “Exposure in school is one of the reasons why we are more confident in what we want to do and teachers are good guides. I always wanted to get into Web designing, so I took up computer science (java and HTML) instead of opting for the usual business maths. Once you have decided on a career, it’s difficult to change it in the later stage of your life. So people these days are very smart in deciding their goals,” says Shiv Kothari, class 12 student.
With schools and colleges exposing students in various fields, students now find it easier to decide on their career options. Hina Javed, a final year student, says, “In my 10th itself I knew what I wanted to do and that’s how I took up physics, chemistry and maths. There are more opportunities in zoology, and with the Web providing an array of information, deciding an institution to study at became easier. And I am really happy that I stuck to what I decided on.”
An increasing number of institutes are also providing specialised courses and this is encouraging students to think outside the square. Viraj Atha, college student says, “We are given a lot more options than the same old BCom and BBA. I have a dream to start a business of my own, and with so many organisations providing entrepreneurship courses, they actually help one prepare better commerce and trade management. And with the Web providing a lot of information, it’s a lot easier to choose which field to get into.”
