‘We were a bunch of eight friends’
My college days were mostly spent in the canteen hanging around a bunch of “gossip girls”. That’s all we did. We ate copious amounts of the famous Jesus and Mary College bhelpuri over incandescent gossip. We were a gang of eight girls and what a gang we were.
Being in an all girls college, we had the freedom to dress up as we liked, talked, screamed, giggled as much as we wanted to. I was studying commerce and friends were the only reason we attended college everyday. Proverbial backbenchers that we were, we made fun of every teacher. I was the girl who would speak Hindi and my friends would make fun of me.
I remember once we were all sitting and munching bhelpuri when my friends found out about my singing talent. I was then urged to sing a Hindi filmi song. I chose to sing Chappa Chappa from Maachis and completely changed the meaning of some of the words in the song not knowing otherwise. We laughed for a whole month after that.
