‘Sneaking out at night was fun’
I studied at the National Institute of Port Management, Chennai. It was very different from regular colleges. Instead of a few hundred students, we were just 60 cadets. Rather than hanging out with friends and going out to have fun in the morning, I would get up at 6.30am to exercise.
Throughout my college life, I was a nerd. I had 11 subjects and life was way too disciplined. We never got a chance to bunk. But we did go out and have our share of fun, amidst the tight security. We would often sneak out and go to the main city in Chennai, cross the barricade and jump over the walls. We would look out for the best of places for a night out, spend the night there and be back before dawn. Since I was terribly shy and didn’t have the confidence to talk to girls, once my friends decided to hook me up with a girl to get entry in this club where you needed to have a partner. My friend made it clear to the girl he hooked me up with that I’m too shy. I spent the entire night at the club without saying a word.
But college was too much fun. It taught me how to be a disciplined man in life.
