‘Oz’ome tennis fervour
Vamos Rafa’ you hear your brother scream when Rafael Nadal is battling it out on the court and you go ‘Yeah, c’mon Rafa, you need to win this so that you can lose to Federer in the finals!’ The Australian Open is thrilling, entertaining and a treat for tennis fans who can’t get enough of the game. The first Grand Slam of the year is seeing a lot of interesting matches. Young tennis aficionados tell us who they’re rooting for.
For student Nisha Prakash, who’s been playing the game since two years, it’s Swiss ace Roger Federer all the way. “I’ve always rooted for him. I think he has a very good chance of clinching the title. But he’s not at his best right now, so it depends on how he plays in the next rounds,” she says.
Among the women, Kim Cljisters has the best chance, she believes. “I was rooting for Justin Henin, but sadly she lost. If Serena Williams didn’t have to pull out, then she would’ve been the hot favourite,” adds Nisha.
Federer fans might be screaming ‘Roger that’, but Nadal fans are no less. “Nadal may win it, although he’s not quite up to the mark of late. Whenever it’s a Federer V/s Nadal final, I’ll always root for Rafa,” says tennis buff Shaoib S. But he observes that Serbian player Novak Djokovic could be a threat too. “There’s a very good chance that he might meet Federer in the semi-finals, says Shoaib, who too thinks that Clijsters has it in her to emerge victorious. As for Caroline Wozniacki, he says, “She has been playing well, but I feel Clijsters has an edge over the others.”
CA student Parth Lakhani too thinks Kim Cljisters will win the women’s title. “I like the way she’s been playing of late,” he says. As for the men, Parth says his opinion will be biased. “That’s ‘cos I’ve been an ardent Federer supporter for five years. ‘If’ by chance Rafa, reaches the final, then he will lose to Fedex!” he says.
A Novak Djokovic vs. Rafael Nadal final is what student Shilpa S wants to watch. “But I’d want Djokovic to win ‘cos he deserves it. Among the women, I hope Caroline Wozniacki wins,” she adds.
Let’s wait and watch to see who ‘slams’ it all the way to the title!
